PILLAR 04
The Polymath's Advantage
Thinking across boundaries. The career that refuses categories.
PILLAR THREE OVERVIEW
Most careers reward specialisation. Pick a lane, go deep, stay put. I went the other direction. I trained as a psychiatrist, played keyboards for Frank Zappa, produced feature films and Broadway theatre, launched technology companies, advised governments on national innovation strategy, and now teach engineering students at Yale about creativity and AI.
That path looks incoherent if you expect a career to fit inside a single category. It looks strategic if you understand that connecting ideas across domains produces insight that depth alone cannot reach.
The Economist once compared me to the offspring of Orson Welles and Peter Drucker. I take that as evidence that the polymath path, while harder to explain, produces something distinctive. Breadth is a strategic advantage in an era where boundaries between disciplines dissolve faster than institutions can map them.
